While the weather is a little cooler we atke the opportunity to collect some seeds from the seed heads we've been saving over the last few weeks from the garden. Some seeds are those from flowers we've grown to attract the bees..others are from heritage varieties of vegetables that will have seeds that will be true to the parent plants.( many new varieties of vegetables have been bred for their flavour, yield etc..and in doing so the seeds these plants throw usually don't grow to be the same as the parent plant. An older "heritage" variety may not have as high a yield..or as large fruit..but the seeds they set will be as the parent plant)

The cooler weather today meant we all had the energy to get into the garden with some real gusto! Blackberries were trimmed from the chook run..the Broad Bean bed was cleared completely..new soil was added to the bed where tomorrow we'll plant corn..mulch was moved..a stone wall was made..plants were trimmed..the garden was watered..busy busy kids in the garden today!

We visited "Tindale Gardens" today..braving the heat & humidity by marching up that STEEP STEEP hill betwen Kallista & Sherbrooke..stopping every now & then to catch our breaths & wipe our brows. We were visiting "Tindale Gardens" to have a look at how careful planning of a garden can have a beautiful result..here a garden that was planted over 70 years ago was planted with a future vision. At Kallista P.S. we will be planning new garden areas over the next few months, & I wanted to use Tindales as an example of planting for the future..with the kids looking at shape & color & texture and size to create a garden that is beautiful.

We moved some mulch from where we've recently had trees felled ( to make way for new classrooms ) to our Kitchen Garden...not an easy feat on a day that reached 28 degrees..when we've been used to days of 16! We used buckets & wheelbarrows..and moved a mountain of mulch..We also collected some rounds of Oak that will make great stools for in the garden..(.love the muscle power of grade 5 & 6 boys!!!)
