SPARKLINTHE GARDEN! ( March )

It's THAT time of the year..the time those bored, raucous birds..those crazy sulfur crested cockies..come down to our garden and chomp, chew, and generally tear apart & destroy everything in sight in our garden...so this is the time of the year that we SPARKLE up the garden...

Over the last few weeks we have been busy tidying up the garden...cutting back overgrown plants, and saving the seed heads of others that we have deliberately let go to seed. Most of the ornamental flowers in the garden - the ones we've planted to attract the bees - have seeds that we can collect and re-sow...some of the vegetables are heritage varieties that will re-seed true to the parent plant, so these we let go to seed and collect the seeds when they are ready. Seed saving is a fun garden activity..great for rainy days when garden classes in the garden are not suitable.

After over a week of above average temperatures, today had a cool start...perfect weather for digging, mulching, and general garden maintenance. We cleared a bed last week..today we freshened it up with new soil..we also pulled out the last of the broad beans - tomorrow we'll add some mulch and re-plant it with some summer vegies. we trimmed the Globe artichoke's lower leaves to let light into the plants below..tidied up the borage..trimmed the dead heads off the pig-face..moved some mulch and trimmed away some elm tree suckers..and Chookingham Palace got a bit of a Spring Clean!

Today we braved the heat & humidity, donned our hats, and walked UP that great long hill from Kallista to Sherbrooke, and visited "Tindale Gardens". The main objective of our visit was to see how a garden that was planted over 70 years ago has grown..how careful planning and knowledge of tree & shrub growth pays off as trees find their space. We focused on height and texture and color and light & shadows..did a lot of "looking up"..We finished off the morning with morning tea on the West lawn, under the giant Red Oak.

4/5D Move some Mulch!!!
Moving mulch and logs from the new classroom construction zone can be hard work...especially on a day of 28 degrees!..but the heat & hardwork was no deterrent...hard work? BRING IT ON!!!!!
