Every year at Kallista, we are faced with a huge "COCKIE-PROBLEM"...those naughty, bored birds seem to take great delight in chomping, chewing, and tearing apart our beautiful garden..but we have found a sloution...by stringing up lots ao SPARKLY things..CD's, tinsel, ribbons etc..the cockies stay away..( I'm sure out garden is visible from space now too!)

It was a cooler start to the morning, but the sun, and it's heat, didn't stay hidden for long. The watering cans were put to good use ( it's been warm for nearly 2 weeks, with no rain..and tomorrow it's supposed to get to 38degrees )..mulch from the leaf pit was added to the old broad bean bed..the newly prepared bed that was cleared and refilled with soil yesterday was raked over..dead flower heads were pruned off..and the chooks got a LOT of garden mulch!

Today we had Charmaine from The Bendigo Bank with us in the garden, along with Kat..and as our garden session was only a short one, we thought it would be a good excuse to show-off all our garden knowledge to both Charmaine - who's never had a garden class with us..-and Kat - who missed out last week. With all the rain & sunshine we've had over the last few weeks the garden is just bursting at the seams..so we played tour guides..what fun!

Busy busy in the garden today..mulching..trimming back overgrown EVERYTHINGS..planting corn and pumpkin..turning new mulch into an old bed...watering...and the SQUEALING with EXCITEMENT!!!..Jennie..JENNIE!!! come see what the chickens have laid!...It's THIS big...and huge..and theres a chicken sitting on it...and sure enough, in one of the nest boxes is a little red hen sitting on THE biggest eggs ever..almost as big as she was..( she didn't look terribly comfortable )..What was it? Where did it come from? Who laid it? Maybe it was a Dragon's egg? No..you know what Jennie? I know that is is not a chickens egg...I know that it is a CROCODILE'S egg!!!Well..maybe it was a chickens egg..but as the first egg a chicken lay's is TINY..maybe this HUGE egg is the very last egg this chicken will lay??? Speculations were thrown about thick & fast..This egg will go down in the history of K.P.S...become part of legend...

With help from Charmaine from the Bendigo Bank, we got stuck into some dirty gardening work. Charmaine's gropu cleared out some old pots, put fresh soil in and planted some Greek Basil. Greek Basil is great at it is not as fragile as it's sweet relative, but just as tasty..perfect for our garden at Kallista. Mrs.Flagg led a group of enthusiastic gardeners, who cleared out a raised garden bed, that looked pretty but is no longer producing anything. This bed will be planted out with corn next week ( after we have topped it up with fresh soil ). Along the way we discovered some Parsnip we had overlooked..and some spring onions we didn't even know were there! What a bonus!

This year, we are finding that many things are happening in our garden a lot sooner than normal..perhaps the days are warmer than usual for this time of year?
We have decided to start planting seeds of zucchini, corn, beans, pumpkin, radish etc..using the plastic containers cherry tomatoes & strawberries come in from the shops..they make perfect mini-greenhouses.
We also have some tomato seedlings that need somewhere to go, so we've cleared out a bed of bok-choy & broccoli & cabbage that has gone to seed..next week we'll put some new soil in to top the bed up..then plant our tomatoes!
